It’s not always easy to tell when you have an electrical emergency on your hands. But we’d much rather you call Acme when you suspect there’s a problem—even on nights and weekends—than risk your health and safety.

These are a few of the most common types of electrical emergencies we see:

  • Power outages
  • Electrical shocks
  • Electrical fires
  • Burning smells coming from the property
  • Buzzing outlets or switches
  • Circuit breaker failures
  • Frayed or damaged wiring
  • Fallen power lines
  • Continuously flickering lights

Don’t see your issue on the list? Give us a call anyway. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Tips for Dealing with Electrical Emergencies

Power Outages
  • Switch off all appliances and lights immediately to prevent damage from power surges.
  • Have an emergency kit nearby with flashlights, a battery-powered radio, and a mobile phone charging station.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. If needed, use coolers with ice to keep food and medicine cold.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles to avoid fire hazards.
  • Never use gas stoves, outdoor grills, or generators indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Call 911 and evacuate your home immediately.
  • If there are others in your home or business, alert everyone to evacuate.
  • Never use water to extinguish an electrical fire. Your fire extinguisher must be a Class C extinguisher rated for electrical fires.
  • Cut the power source if it’s safe to do so by switching off the main breaker.
  • Call 911 to request medical assistance.
  • Turn off the power source immediately. Locate the circuit breaker or fuse box and turn off power to the affected area.
  • Don’t touch the person being shocked directly. Touching them while they’re in contact with the electrical source can put you in danger.
  • If you can’t turn off the power immediately, use a non-conductive object like a wooden broom handle, PVC pipe, or rubber doormat to separate the person being shocked from the electrical source.
  • Stay calm and follow the emergency operator’s directions to keep the victim safe until help arrives.
  • Turn off power to the affected area immediately.
  • Don’t touch or attempt to repair exposed wires yourself. Call a licensed and trusted electrician with the experience, training, and tools to safely repair electrical wiring.
  • Keep everyone away from the damaged wires, especially children and pets.
  • Do not use electrical outlets, switches, or appliances connected to the damaged wiring.
  • If you notice a burning odor, smoke, or sparks, evacuate the area immediately and dial 911.
